While it may be bigger and more expensive than the Hyundai i20, interior quality in the Bayon hasn't been given a huge upgrade. There are still plenty of hard plastics dotted around the interior, including in the places you'll touch and rest your elbows. It's not unattractive but if you desire more upmarket materials, the Volkswagen T-Cross is a better bet, while the Peugeot 2008 boasts a much more adventurous design.

Hyundai Bayon dashboard

There's plenty of crossover between the i20 and Bayon when it comes to technology, with top versions getting the same pair of 10.25-inch digital screens. The one behind the steering wheel displays key driving information, while the central screen takes care of media, navigation and car settings. It can also display Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, while Hyundai's BlueLink smartphone app can let owners connect with the car remotely, checking its location, status and sending routes to the sat nav for their next journey.

It's a large infotainment display for a car in this class and we consistently find Hyundai's software is some of the easiest to use. The latest version is no exception and it's bolstered by sharp graphics and quick responses.

Equipment

Depending on trim, alloy wheels range from 16 to 17-inches in size. Nine paint colours are offered for the car, seven of which can be had with a contrasting black roof to help the Bayon stand out.

There are only three trim levels for the Bayon, so choosing which one you want should be fairly straightforward. SE Connect doesn't skimp on the essentials, so there's still a 10.25-inch instrument display and eight-inch infotainment touchscreen. Buyers also get cruise control, automatic headlights, Bluetooth and a rear-view camera, along with lots of safety kit.

Premium trim adds Bluelink connected services, 17-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel and front seats, LED headlights and a wireless charging pad. Families should also appreciate the rear privacy glass, which helps keep the car cool in summer. Sitting at the top of the range, Ultimate adds keyless entry, an upgraded Bose sound system and contrasting black roof and door mirrors.

Options

Hyundai typically steers clear of offering a huge number of options, instead steering buyers towards the most suitable trim level. You can, however, add a metallic or pearlescent paint finish for £550. There's also a list of approved accessories, ranging from floor mats to bike carriers, a tow bar and even sport stripe decals in Sea Blue, Matte Black and Glossy White.
