Hyundai Bayon SUV - Reliability & safety
Hyundai customers tend to report few faults
Reliability has traditionally been a Hyundai strong point, with the brand performing well in our Driver Power owner satisfaction survey over the years. If a problem were to arise, Hyundai's five-year warranty is also a selling point; it’s longer than the typical three years of cover still offered by some rivals.
Hyundai Bayon reliability
The outgoing Hyundai i20 came 68th out of the top 75 models in 2020, which is a pretty good result for a car about to be replaced. As a development of the latest version of the supermini, buyers will be hoping the Bayon does even better. The 1.0-litre petrol engine is certainly a tried-and-tested unit, although technology like the 48-volt mild-hybrid system and clutchless manual gearbox is new.
As a manufacturer, Hyundai came 11th out of 29 brands in 2022’s Driver Power survey, with 21% of owners reporting a fault within the first 12 months of ownership.
Safety
The Bayon is available with a long list of active and passive safety equipment, from lane-keeping assist to autonomous emergency braking and automatic high-beam activation for the headlights. The car was tested by Euro NCAP in October 2021 and received a four-star rating. While certainly not an 'unsafe' car, it failed to score five stars for two main reasons; dashboard strictures were judged to be a potential risk to the driver's legs in a head-on collision and the car lacks airbags dedicated to preventing injuries from passengers falling into each other in the event of an impact from the side.
No matter which trim level you choose, there are safety features you'd usually associate with a bigger car, including driver attention alerts and 'eCall', which can summon rescue services in an emergency. Premium trim adds height-adjustable front seatbelts, while Ultimate brings blind-spot warnings and lane follow assist. There’s even a system that reminds you not to leave occupants in the rear seats when you get out of the car.
