Jeep Compass SUV - Practicality & boot space
Loads of interior and boot space makes the Compass a practical family SUV
Jeep Compass interior space & storage
The Compass is 150mm longer than the Jeep Renegade and slightly larger than a Nissan Qashqai. Much of this extra size translates to increased legroom for those in the back. Headroom isn’t too bad either, even though passengers sit relatively upright, not slouching as they might in a saloon. Avoid the panoramic sunroof if you're likely to carry adults in the back often, because it cuts into the ceiling height. Those in the front should have no trouble getting comfortable and the large glass area allows plenty of light in as well as giving a good view out.
Boot space
Although the 438-litre boot is quite a bit bigger than the Renegade’s 351 litres of space, it’s small compared to other family SUVs. It’s roughly on a par with those of the Cupra Formentor and Range Rover Evoque, but some way off the 510-litre SEAT Ateca or the 520-litre Peugeot 3008. The Compass wins back points with a practical and versatile flat loading floor though.
Plug-in hybrid models take a very tiny hit on boot space, offering 420 litres of space behind the rear seats. Usually, a PHEV will have a much smaller boot than a conventional petrol equivalent, so it’s good to see that the Jeep Compass 4xe will still be suitable for family life. The boot floor is slightly higher, making it a little easier to load bulky items.
Towing
Not all plug-in hybrids can tow, so it’s good to see that the 4xe can hitch up a trailer weighing up to 1,250kg. The 1.3-litre petrol has a surprisingly large 1,750kg, towing capacity, mind.
