The hybrid Lexus NX will be an attractive proposition for company-car drivers
The NX will be attractive to private and company-car drivers, thanks to plenty of standard equipment and the sheen of the Lexus badge. It also avoids the 4% company-car tax surcharge for older diesel cars, although its BiK ratings aren’t as appealing as they used to be.
Lexus NX MPG & CO2
With the vast majority of the NX’s rivals favouring diesel and increasingly, plug-in hybrid power, Lexus’ decision to only offer a petrol hybrid powertrain weakens the car’s appeal in the UK. As part of its 2017 facelift, the slow-selling turbocharged petrol Lexus NX 200t was dropped from the range, leaving just the Lexus NX 300h hybrid.
The NX 300h claims to offer fuel consumption of up to 39.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 161g/km with front-wheel drive, which drops slightly to 37.1mpg and 171g/km when four-wheel drive is fitted. These figures also vary slightly with the bigger wheels of more expensive models. As with most hybrid models, you have to drive carefully if you want to match the official figures, and the CVT automatic gearbox can hold onto high revs for longer than necessary.
After the first year’s CO2-based road tax (typically included in the on-the-road-price), all hybrid Lexus NX cost the discounted rate of annual VED (tax). Those models with a list price (including options) of more than £40,000 are liable for an additional surcharge of in years two to six, during that period.
Insurance groups
Lexus NX 300h hybrid models fall into insurance groups 29-33 to 35, depending on the trim level you choose. The Volvo XC60 starts in group 31, while the sporty Jaguar F-Pace is actually cheaper to insure, sitting in groups 31 to 33.
Warranty
Lexus offers a three-year/60,000-mile warranty to NX buyers, which is the same as other premium manufacturers like Audi and similar to the three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty offered by BMW. You also get five-year/60,000-mile cover on the car's hybrid technology and battery. However, parent company Toyota offers a five-year/100,000-mile warranty on its hybrid SUV, the RAV4.
