Mazda6 Tourer estate (2012-2022) review - Reliability & safety
Full marks for safety, plus most Mazda owners report a good ownership experience
The Mazda6 came in 11th place out of the top 75 cars to own in our 2020 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, but it didn’t appear in our rundown in 2022.
Mazda6 Tourer reliability
The Mazda6 was rated above average for reliability in our 2020 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey of cars currently on sale in the UK. Of the owners who responded, 15.9% reported experiencing a problem with their car at least once, with electrical issues being the most common faults.
Like many modern diesel cars, the Mazda6’s 2.2-litre engines aren’t built to do frequent short journeys, and problems with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) can appear if the filter is allowed to build up too much soot. Ensure the car is serviced on time and do suitable journeys and you shouldn’t face many problems. The petrol engines, meanwhile, are seemingly very reliable, living up to Mazda’s impressive reputation.
Safety
The Mazda6 breezed to a five-star result when it was crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2018. It offers excellent protection, with an impressive 95% score in the adult occupant protection category.
Its high score is partly due to the exhaustive amount of safety kit on board. All cars get auto headlights with high-beam assist, a windscreen-projected head-up display, traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and auto emergency braking. Unusually, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too (they’re often bundled into an expensive safety pack). Buyers of the top-spec model also get a 360-degree camera, driver attention alert, adaptive LED headlights and rear auto emergency braking.
