MG HS review (2019-2024) - Reliability & safety

MG may be making better cars now than when it relaunched in the UK, but it seems a substantial number of owners aren’t totally happy with their purchase. In 2022, the brand finished second-to-last out of the 29 manufacturers ranked in our Driver Power survey. The HS didn’t individually feature in our survey but the smaller ZS came in a disappointing 61st place out of 75 cars – 20-places down on its ranking from the year before.

Thanks to a healthy roster of safety kit, the MG achieved an impressive five-star Euro NCAP score. That's significantly more reassuring than the three-star rating given to the petrol MG ZS, while the electric MG ZS EV also managed a five-star score in 2019.

MG HS reliability

MG owners rated the brand’s overall reliability particularly poorly, with 35% of MG owners reporting a fault in the first year of ownership in the 2022 Driver Power survey, but the mood improved when it came to value for money. 

Safety

Unlike the smaller petrol MG ZS, which only managed a disappointing three out of five stars when it was crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2017, the HS achieved five stars in 2019. MG has fitted autonomous emergency braking and lane assist as standard to the HS, bundled in a package called MG Pilot. Cars equipped with the DCT automatic also add adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist, which can follow the car in front at speeds of up to 35mph.
