New Audi S1 launched
High-performance Audi S1 will have enough power to rival Volkswagen Golf GTI
Audi unveiled the new high-performance Audi S1 at the Geneva Motor Show yesterday and the car looks to set blend aggressive, sporty styling with blistering performance.
Audi S1 details
The S1 is a hot hatchback based on the Audi A1 and is designed to rival cars like the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI. It will come fitted with a 228bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine capable of 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds – the VW Golf GTI does the same sprint in 6.5 seconds.
The Audi S1 Sportback version gets exactly the same engine and parts as the standard three-door S1 but features a pair of rear doors, making it a more practical option for customers who regularly travel with more than two people.
Audi S1 fuel economy
Audi claims the S1 hatchback will return fuel economy figures of 33.6mpg and emit 162g/km of CO2. The Sportback version will do 33.1mpg, while emitting 166g/km of CO2.
As with all Audi S models, the S1 will come with Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system for better grip levels when cornering or driving in slippery conditions. Both cars will use a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while automatic versions won't be available.
Audi S1 specs
On the outside, the S1 models get a set of LED rear lights and new xenon headlights, which will be used again on the facelifted Audi A1 due out later this year. The front and rear bumpers, side sills and the exhaust system all get a more aggressive look that sets the S1 apart from the rest of the A1 range. Large 17-inch alloy wheels and a selection of four new exterior colours complete the revised look.
The interior of the S1 will be finished predominantly in black but with touches of grey and silver on equipment like the dials and pedals. Audi S sport seats will be available as an option, as will the Quattro interior styling package, which adds touches of bold colour to the otherwise muted scheme.
Audi S1 price and release date
Audi has confirmed the S1 will be available to order in March and will cost £24,900 for the three-door and £25,630 for the five-door Sportback version.
