New Toyota Aygo teaser picture released
Teaser picture of the new Toyota Aygo has been revealed ahead of Geneva
A teaser picture released today has given us a decent idea of what the new Toyota Aygo will look like, when it is launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
Although a Toyota spokesperson would neither confirm nor deny exact details concerning the new Toyota Aygo to Carbuyer, we know the new car will be based on the forthcoming Peugeot 108 – and that car's specifications are already widely available.
New Toyota Aygo details
Using the new Peugeot 108 as a guide, we know that the new Toyota Aygo is set to be bigger than the car it replaces, although it will keep the current car’s wheel-at-each-corner look. The new Aygo will also get Toyota’s new family face, which has a beak-like look, chrome highlights, and a large Toyota badge at its centre.
Of more importance to families, is that the car looks set to be available as a practical five-door car, as well as being offered as a cheaper three-door model. We also know that the Peugeot 108 will get a full-length retractable fabric roof, so there’s a good chance the new Aygo will also get this feature.
The new Aygo will compete with the same rivals as the old car, which include the Volkswagen up!, Skoda Citigo, and SEAT Mii. The Hyundai i10 – Carbuyer’s Car of the Year – will be another key rival for the upcoming Toyota Aygo.
New Toyota Aygo specifications
The new Toyota Aygo is set to be lighter than the model it replaces, as Toyota works to make the new car more fuel efficient and cleaner in terms of CO2 emissions. That said, the 2014 Aygo is set to use the same engine as the current car – albeit in a reworked form – so the car will be extremely economical. The current model returns economy of 64.2mpg and emissions of just 99g/km, for free road tax, so we expect even more impressive figures from the new car.
New Toyota Aygo interior, practicality, equipment and safety
A teaser video released by Toyota gives us a brief glimpse of the new car’s dashboard, which is set to be composed of cool shapes, body-coloured bare metal, and have a large speedometer that will dominate the dials behind the steering wheel.
We don’t know much about interior space, yet, but the new Toyota Aygo should be capable of carrying four adults in relative comfort, although rear-space will be quite tight. We also expect the new model to get a boot of just under 200 litres, which can be extended by folding the 50:50 split rear seats.
Although the new Toyota Aygo will be the cheapest model in the company’s range, higher-spec cars will get decent levels of equipment. Even the basic model should get a stereo with Bluetooth connectivity to allow wireless streaming of music and phone calls – to appeal to the younger buyers the new Aygo will be predominantly aimed at. Top-spec models, meanwhile, are set to get kit such as keyless entry, a centrally mounted touchscreen with sat-nav, and air-conditioning.
The new car is set to improve on the current version's three-star Euro NCAP rating. It will be fitted with the latest safety equipment and we'd be very surprised if it didn't get awarded a five-star rating for safety.
New Toyota Aygo Prices and release date
The new Toyota Aygo will get its first formal unveil at the Geneva Motor Show when we also expect exact specs to be released. The new car should arrive in showrooms this summer, with prices starting at around £8,595.
