- Entry-level CLE 200 AMG Line to cost £46,605
- Mild-hybrid, petrol and diesel engine options available
- Plug-in hybrid option to follow in the future
Revealed last summer, the CLE Coupé is Mercedes’ new luxury two-door, replacing the discontinued C-Class and E-Class Coupés. It is now available to customers in the UK for a starting price of £46,605.
Buyers have a choice of four trim levels, starting with AMG Line. This entry-level model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, automatic climate control, adaptive LED headlights, a leather steering wheel, interior ambient lighting and a wireless phone charger. For additional features, such as a panoramic sliding roof, heated seats and a 360-degree parking camera, buyers can fork out an extra £3,750 to upgrade to the AMG Line Premium trim level.
The top-spec Premium Plus and Premier Edition models add 3D Surround Sound and a heads-up display, with the latter also receiving Nappa leather upholstery and black exterior accents. If you want Mercedes’ latest advanced driving assistance systems, including Active Speed Limit Assist, Evasive Steering Assist and Active Lane Change Assist, you’ll have to hand over an additional £1,695 for the Driving Assistance Package Plus.
All trim levels of the CLE Coupé come equipped with an 11.9-inch central display to handle the infotainment, alongside a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster for the driver. This new system supports both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so phone connectivity should be trouble-free. There are eight paint colours to choose from, including three pricier options: Patagonia Red, Alpine Grey and Opalite White. Boot space is the same across all models at 420 litres, marginally smaller than the similar BMW 4 Series and Audi A5.
Four engine options are available at launch – three petrol and one diesel – and all include a mild-hybrid system and nine-speed automatic gearbox. Both the CLE 200 and CLE 300 4MATIC use 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, the 300 getting more power and four-wheel drive. Buyers wanting even more power can opt for the CLE 450 4MATIC, which trades four cylinders for six, with power rising to 376 bhp. The CLE 220 d is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, good for up to 60.1 mpg. It’s worth noting that the CLE 300 and 450 aren’t available with the cheapest, AMG Line trim level.
Compared to the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5, the starting price of the CLE Coupé sits a few thousand pounds higher, with the BMW starting from £43,470 and the Audi, £42,545. Mercedes has confirmed that a plug-in hybrid model will appear in the near future, and a Mercedes CLE Cabriolet is on the way too.
