Keeping running costs low is a priority for private and business drivers alike. Fortunately the Mondeo's range of engines is now more fuel-efficient than ever, and Ford gives buyers a choice of hybrid or diesel power.

Ford Mondeo Estate MPG & CO2

Only diesels and hybrid models are available now, so all Mondeos are economical. When fitted with a manual gearbox, the entry-level 148bhp 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel can achieve fuel economy of 54.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 119-122g/km - although you can expect the CO2 emissions to be higher when Ford publishes the latest WLTP data. The more powerful 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel does 50.4mpg and emits more CO2, which pushes Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) liability up several bands higher than the 148bhp engine. The less powerful diesel is our pick of the engine range as we don’t think many drivers will really need the extra performance.

A four-wheel-drive system is available – for a bit more money – with the more powerful of these 2.0-litre diesels. Adding it negatively affects fuel consumption and emissions, though - you can expect 47.1mpg and the highest CO2 emissions in the range. Both two- and four-wheel-drive versions of the 187bhp engine are only offered with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Opting for the hybrid means you can expect 49.6mpg, and its lower CO2 output makes it comfortably the best choice for company-car drivers. However, the Toyota Camry is slightly more economical at 53.2mpg, while plug-in hybrids like the Volkswagen Passat GTE have much lower quoted CO2 emissions and manage around 30 miles of electric-only driving.

All Ford Mondeo Estates attract road tax of £150 a year, while those with a list price (including options) of more than £40,000 are liable for an additional surcharge of £325 a year for the first five years of ownership, bringing the annual bill to £475 during that period - although you’ve got to tick every option to get to this price bracket.

Insurance group

The Ford Mondeo insurance ratings range from group 22 for the entry-level diesel model to 29 for the automatic-gearbox 2.0-litre top model.

Warranty

Ford’s three-year/60,000-mile warranty falls behind those offered by Kia (seven years) and Hyundai (five years), but it can be extended to a maximum of five years or 100,000 miles at extra cost. The extended warranties include roadside assistance for the period of cover.

Servicing

Ford has a huge dealer network and servicing costs that are usually a little cheaper than for a VW. Servicing intervals depend what model you choose. Ford also offers a Protect Premium Plan, which covers servicing for two years for £390 or three years for £590.
