Ford Ranger pickup (2011-2022) - Reliability & safety
The Ford Ranger is among the safest vehicles of its type, with a five-star crash-test rating
Strong construction and thorough crash-testing mean the Ford Ranger as a safe vehicle to travel in, but Ford's customers haven't been overwhelmingly positive about its products in recent surveys.
Ford Ranger reliability
The Ford Ranger should be extremely tough and has certainly been designed to take years of hard work in its stride. While the Ranger itself didn't feature, Ford was only rated 25th out of 29 manufacturers in our 2021 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. This could be a concern when it comes to servicing or repairs at the dealership.
Nevertheless, there are plenty of Ford dealers to choose from, as the brand has more outlets than any other manufacturer in the UK. That’s particularly important for a commercial vehicle, which needs to earn its keep by being kept in working order on the road.
There’s also a three-year/60,000-mile warranty, which should take the sting out of any early breakdowns – although many rivals offer much more attractive packages in this department.
Safety
Despite their size, some pickups are a bit of an unknown quantity when it comes to safety. Luckily, that’s not the case with the Ford Ranger, which has been crash-tested by Euro NCAP. It was the first pickup to achieve the maximum five-star rating, with a superb 96% score for adult occupant protection and an impressive 86% rating for child occupant protection. Not many other pickups have been tested, but the Nissan Navara only scored four stars.
Safety can be improved still further with the addition of a driver assistance pack that includes autonomous emergency braking, as well as lane-departure warning, road-sign recognition and auto-dipping headlights. This is optional on Limited and Wildtrak models.
Seven airbags and electronic stability control are fitted as standard, while Double Cab models also get childproof rear door locks and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. All models are fitted with tyre-pressure monitoring with the exception of the entry-level XL model where it’s an optional extra.
