Honda Civic Type R hatchback - MPG, running costs & CO2 (2017-2021)
Honda Civic Type R running costs are midway between sensible hatchback and serious sports car
Part of the appeal of cars like the Honda Civic Type- R is that they fuse sports-car performance with hatchback practicality – and this includes running costs that aren’t as intimidating as their acceleration and top speed figures.
Although running costs for the Type R will be far higher than a ‘normal’ Honda Civic, some sports cars with similar performance can be far more painful to pay for in the long term.
Honda Civic Type R MPG & CO2
The Civic Type R is a relatively light car, and one imbued with a huge amount of power, so cruising at motorway speeds doesn’t make big demands of the engine. This means it doesn’t have to work very hard and can be surprisingly economical given its performance potential.
However, the quoted figure of 33.2mpg won’t endear it to those who cover a huge annual mileage, while business car users will be put off by its 192/km CO2 emissions – they mean a top-rate Benefit in Kind (BiK) rating, although this compares equally to other hot hatches. The Sport Line version has a slightly better 34mpg economy figure, probably because its smaller wing and wheels create less drag. Its CO2 emissions of 187g/km won't make it any cheaper to tax, however.
Insurance
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has given the Civic Type-R a group 40 rating out of 50, which is higher than the group 33 of its predecessor. It's also higher than the group 29 rating of the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport.
Servicing
While servicing costs may not be a lot higher than other Honda Civics, replacing consumable parts such as tyres and brakes certainly will be – particularly if you regularly exploit all of the Type R’s performance.
Honda offers service packages which can help you budget for scheduled servicing, but it’s wise to remember that looking after a Type R will involve measures somewhat beyond looking after a regular Honda Civic.
Warranty
Honda’s three-year/90,000-mile warranty isn’t as generous as those from Kia or Hyundai, but exceeds that provided by Volkswagen and Audi. It also includes full UK and European breakdown cover, adding reassurance you won't be left stranded on business trips or holidays. You can extend your Honda’s warranty for an additional year or two years, for an extra fee.
