Mitsubishi Shogun Sport SUV - MPG, running costs & CO2 (2018-2021)
One available diesel engine in Mitsubishi Shogun Sport lags behind class leaders for efficiency
Just one diesel engine is available in the Shogun Sport and while powerful in its own right, it lags behind equivalent diesel rivals in both performance and economy terms. The engine is shared with the Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck and doesn’t seem particularly modern; its middling efficiency only adds to this feeling. A reasonably impressive five-year warranty is the only real bright spot when considering the Shogun Sport’s running costs.
Mitsubishi Shogun Sport MPG & CO2
The Shogun Sport comes with a 2.4-litre diesel engine that returns 33.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 223g/km. These figures aren’t particularly impressive when compared to many rivals; the Kia Sorento, for example, has a more powerful 2.2-litre diesel engine that returns 43.5mpg and 170g/km of CO2 when fitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox similar to the one in the Shogun Sport.
The high CO2 emissions mean the Sport sits comfortably in the 37% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) bracket, making it an unappealing company-car choice.
The Shogun Sport costs £140 a year to tax, but be aware that the higher-spec model could end up costing over £40,000 if options are added; in cases where this happens, you’ll have to pay an additional £310 surcharge for years two to six of the car’s life, bringing your annual tax bill to £450 during this period.
Insurance group
Depending on the exact model, the Shogun falls into groups 38 or 43. The top-spec car has more safety equipment, so despite its higher price, it’s actually in the lower group.
Warranty
The Shogun Sport is covered by a five-year/62,500-mile warranty. The length of the coverage is above average, only lagging behind a few rivals such as the seven-year/100,000-mile cover Kia provides to Sorento buyers, or the five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty provided with the Hyundai Santa Fe. It does, however, trump most of the other warranties around; it’s better than the three-year warranty that comes with the Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan X-Trail, for example.
Servicing
The Shogun Sport requires a service every year or 12,500 miles. The official price for Mitsubishi’s three-year/37,50- mile service plan has yet to be announced, but it’s just under £1,000 for the standard Shogun, so expect something similar for the Shogun Sport.
