Toyota Hilux pickup - MPG, running costs & CO2
The Toyota Hilux is reasonably economical, but some rivals are cheaper to run
Buyers can order the Toyota Hilux with an entry-level 2.4-litre diesel engine producing 148bhp, or with a more powerful 2.8-litre version producing 201bhp. Both engines have enough pulling power to tow up to 3,500kg with a payload capacity of up to 1,030kg but they have to work quite hard, meaning the Hilux isn’t as economical as it might be.

Opt for a Hilux with the smaller 2.4-litre engine and a manual or automatic gearbox, and economy of up to 31.7mpg is possible with CO2 emissions of 223-269g/km depending on bodystyle and specification.
The larger 2.8-litre diesel engine is limited to Invincible and Invincible X spec models. It’s the most economical engine in the Hilux range when equipped with a manual gearbox managing around 33mpg while emitting 223g/km of CO2. Choosing the automatic gearbox reduces economy to around 30mpg and increases emissions to 242g/km.
Because the Hilux is classed as a light commercial vehicle, it incurs a flat road-tax rate of £320 a year. Thanks to the Hilux' commercial status, business owners can claim back the VAT on buying a pickup. Business drivers are also offered a flat-rate Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) liability, rather than the CO2-based sliding scale for cars and SUVs.
Warranty
Although it’s a commercial vehicle, the Hilux gets the same class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile warranty as all the other cars in Toyota’s range. This is more generous than the five-year/62,500-mile warranty offered with the Mitsubishi L200 and three-year/60,000-mile warranties of the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok.
Servicing
The Hilux needs servicing annually or every 10,000 miles. If you’re VAT-registered you should be able to claim 20% back from the cost of any maintenance.
Insurance costs
The entry-level Active trim is the cheapest version of the Hilux to insure, sitting in group 41D. Meanwhile, the Invincible and Invincible X double cab models sit in ground 42D to 45D depending on the engine chosen, and the GR Sport comes in at group 43D.
