Better design makes the latest Suzuki Swift far more spacious than its predecessor
With previous Swifts, compact external dimensions inevitably led to a rather cramped interior and Suzuki has sought to improve this for the latest car. However, it still doesn’t offer as practical an all-round package as many of its rivals.
Suzuki Swift interior space & storage
In the quest for a more versatile interior, Suzuki has made subtle changes to the latest Swift’s proportions. It’s 10mm shorter but slightly wider than the previous generation, and 20mm longer between the front and rear axles. That frees up space inside the car as well as in the boot.
The result is that four adults will fit inside, although anyone six feet tall may run rather short on rear legroom if those in the front are the same height. The front seats should be comfortable for most, though and the tall roof means headroom is plentiful. Every Swift comes with five doors as standard, and they open wide, making it easy to get in and out.
Boot space
Boot space hasn’t always been a particular Suzuki Swift virtue, and the latest version still falls short of the load capacity offered by the Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio and Dacia Sandero. However, at 264 litres it’s still 54 litres bigger than that of the previous model.
Unfortunately, there’s a relatively high lip over which loads have to be manoeuvred, but the actual shape of the boot is quite accommodating. The rear seats can be split 60:40, but when folded they sit flat on top of the seat bases rather than flush with the boot floor. This means there's a step to negotiate when you try to slide heavy, bulky loads into the boot.
