Practicality & boot space Rating

3.5 out of 5

Being closely related to one of the best hatchbacks on the market (the Volkswagen Golf) means that the T-Roc's interior and boot are spacious and well sized. The car's considerable price means larger rivals like the Skoda Karoq can be available for less outlay, but Volkswagen hopes many buyers are likely to forgo practicality in favour of extra style and road presence.

Volkswagen T-Roc interior space & storage

One of the best reasons to choose a T-Roc over an equivalent Volkswagen Golf is the extra space inside; there’s enough room for four adults to sit in comfort with excellent headroom, while getting in and out is easier thanks to the raised height. There are cup-holders front and rear, plus a decent-sized glovebox and door bins to the front. Other rivals may offer better packaging, more space or even extra seats for the money, but the T-Roc is a comfortable and spacious car nonetheless.

Boot space

VW T-Roc boot space measures 445-litres with the rear seats up – 65 litres more than you’ll find in a Golf hatchback. The similar yet more expensive Audi Q2 makes do with a 405-litre load area. Thanks to its square shape, the T-Roc’s boot offers 1,532 litres with the rear bench pushed forward and folded down, while a movable boot floor can sit low for maximum space, or higher up to create a level loading lip. Those who need a four-wheel drive T-Roc should be aware that – the rear differential takes up space and requires the boot floor to be raised, reducing capacity to 392 litres.

It's worth bearing in mind that the optional spare wheel fills most of the boot's lower tier, doing away with 79 litres of luggage capacity. We think it’s worth adding, though, as it only costs around £100 and could make life easier if you get a puncture.

Towing

Towing with your T-Roc is certainly possible. Even the 1.0-litre petrol can pull a 1,300kg braked trailer, though, while the 2.0-litre 4Motion model adds another 400kg. The 2.0-litre diesel can manage up to 1,600kg, with the 1.6-litre matching the 1.5-litre petrol at 1,500kg. VW offers a removable tow bar with 13-pin connection and a range of useful accessories for £700.
