Citroën C4 SpaceTourer MPV (2013-2019) - Reliability & safety
Reliability has been something of a weak point for Citroen
Over the years, Citroen has had a rather lacklustre reputation for owner satisfaction. However, up-to-date design means the C4 SpaceTourer was a frontrunner for safety when it launched – as evidenced by its excellent five-star rating from Euro NCAP.
Citroen C4 SpaceTourer reliability
As a brand, Citroen finished in 18th place in our 2020 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey – ahead of manufacturers including Volkswagen, Ford and BMW. Owners appear to have a love/hate relationship with their cars: they’re generally disappointed by infotainment and exterior build quality but are delighted with low running costs and practicality. Just over 17% of Citroen owners reported one or more faults within the first 12 months of ownership.
Safety
Rather more reassuring are the SpaceTourer’s safety credentials – it received the full five stars after independent crash-testing by expert body Euro NCAP. It’s disappointing, though, that automatic emergency braking is featured only as part of a Driver Assistance Pack, which also includes active cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and speed-limit recognition. It’s also worth noting that these features can only be added to the Feel and Flair models.
Entry-level Touch buyers make do with a list of standard safety features that includes a ‘Coffee Break Alert’ tiredness monitoring system, but otherwise consists of only the mandatory equipment that every car is fitted with by law. The electric parking brake is automatic, though, and includes a helpful hill-start facility, while the hazard warning lights will automatically flash to alert following cars when emergency braking is detected.
