Vauxhall Astra Griffin cuts nearly £3k from petrol and electric models
The Vauxhall Astra gets a new special edition that packs more kit for less cash
- New entry-level trim
- Astra Electric Griffin costs from £34,995
- Petrol-powered Astra Griffin costs from £24,795
The new Vauxhall Astra Griffin has just been revealed, lowering the starting price of the popular family hatchback by nearly £3,000. The new trim level is available for both the petrol-powered Astra and the Astra Electric, while the latter can also be ordered as an estate in Sports Tourer form.
The Astra Griffin follows the trend set by Vauxhall’s previous limited edition trim levels: the Vauxhall Corsa Yes Edition and the Vauxhall Mokka Griffin. Both introduced a lower starting price for their respective models, as well as a lengthier standard kit list. Both of those attributes hold true for the new Astra Griffin, which packs more kit for less cash compared to the previous entry-level Design trim.
It’s a move that reflects a wider industry trend towards lower electric car prices, with a cheaper Skoda Enyaq now available as well as price drops for the Peugeot E-2008 and E-208. In this case, it’s interesting to see the cut-price Griffin trim level apply to the petrol-powered Astra as well as the EV, meaning car buyers will have access to a cheaper Astra no matter whether they prefer to fill up or plug in.
What do I need to know about the new Vauxhall Astra Griffin?
There’s nothing radically different about the Vauxhall Astra Griffin compared to other Astra models, besides the lower price tag. Interestingly, you get more equipment than you do with the pricer Design trim level, making the Griffin look like even better value.
All Astra Griffins get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, 180-degree parking camera and front and rear parking sensors. On the outside, the only differences are the LED headlights and the tinted rear windows, plus black roof rails for Sports Tourer models.
Petrol models are powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine with 128bhp, which drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The Astra Electric gets a 54kWh battery and a 154bhp motor, with its maximum range standing at 258 miles.
How much does the Vauxhall Astra Griffin cost and when can I buy one?
Thanks to the new Griffin trim level, the basic Vauxhall Astra with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox starts from just £24,795 now. That’s a £2,775 saving over the previous entry-level Design trim.
The Vauxhall Astra Electric Griffin costs from £34,995 – a whole £2,800 cheaper than the old Design model. The electric Astra can be ordered as an estate instead of a hatchback, too, with the Astra Sports Tourer Electric Griffin costing from £37,195.
Electric models are open to order now, and Vauxhall will begin deliveries of the first customer examples imminently. The petrol-powered Astra Griffin will be available to order from November.
