Honda HR-V SUV - MPG, running costs & CO2 (2015-2020)

The Honda HR-V boasts some impressively low running costs, but it can't quite beat the most efficient versions of the Peugeot 2008 or SEAT Arona. However, the running costs are still quite manageable, which makes the HR-V's high-ish purchase prices easier to bear.

Honda intends for the HR-V to be one of the most efficient crossover SUVs you can buy, but its fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures can get a little confusing, as they can vary depending on what specification and gearbox you choose.

The 128bhp 1.5-litre i–VTEC petrol engine boasts an average fuel economy of around 42mpg when paired with the six-speed manual gearbox, which falls slightly to 41.5mpg with a CVT automatic gearbox. Emissions start from 148g/km for the six-speed manual in S spec, rising to 156g/km for an EX spec model equipped with a CVT gearbox.

Opting for the more powerful 180bhp petrol engine in Sport trim means you also get larger alloy wheels, with the manual version capable of around 42mpg and emissions of 151g/km. Going for the CVT automatic gearbox sees economy fall to around 39mpg, with emissions increasing to 163g/km.

In late 2020, the i-DTEC diesel engine was discontinued from the HR-V model range.

Insurance

As with many cars, the insurance group the HR-V occupies depends on its engine and trim level. The entry-level S model with the petrol engine sits in group 19 (out of 50), while the other trims slot into group 20. The powerful Sport model costs most to insure as it’s in group 27.

Warranty

Honda provides a three-year/90,0000-mile warranty on all its new cars. The brand also offers to extend that for a fourth or fifth year, at a cost of £460 and £850 respectively.

Servicing

Honda also offers fixed-price servicing on the new HR-V, with the first year's maintenance costing just over £200 and the second setting you back around £300. You can get a five-year service plan for £900, but only on cars that are under eight months old and have less than 8,000 miles on the clock.
