One advantage of the GLE Coupe's more comfort-orientated handling is a plush ride. UK versions sadly don't get Mercedes' clever E-Active Body Control, but even the standard air suspension makes it one of the most comfortable cars in its class. There's a small amount of wind turbulence from the door mirrors and tyre roar at high speeds, but otherwise refinement is excellent.

In the front seats, the GLE Coupe's interior is virtually identical to the standard model, which is no bad thing. A pair of high-resolution 12.3-inch displays replace the instrument binnacle, with the left-hand screen providing infotainment and navigation. It's powered by Merc's latest MBUX system, which is very slick, but not quite as easy to use as BMW's iDrive.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported and we're fans of the augmented reality sat nav that uses a windscreen-mounted camera to take footage of the road ahead and overlay arrows onto it. The trackpad on the centre console is also welcome because it's easier and safer to use this while on the move, rather than prodding at the touchscreen itself.

Equipment

Opt for the GLE 400 d and it comes in just one trim: AMG Line Premium Plus, which is opulent and features 22-inch alloy wheels, multibeam LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof and a Burmester stereo. Technology like a head-up display, 64-colour ambient lighting and wireless charging all add to the modern luxury experience, and there's even an 'Energising package' that's designed to relax or stimulate the driver, depending on the situation.

Parktronic, part of the parking package that helps assist with steering and maneuvering when parallel parking, is standard across the GLE’s all four trim levels. A Towing Package can be added for around £1,200, which includes Trailer Stability Assist to help stop a trailer swaying.
