Mercedes GLE Coupe SUV - Reliability & safety
Excellent safety but questions over reliability remain
Mercedes is the world's oldest car manufacturer, and its reputation for engineering excellence inspires brand loyalty. However, the manufacturer failed to impress in our 2020 Driver Power survey, coming 28th out of 30 manufacturers, so it can't rest on its laurels. Safety is less of a worry, with the latest collision prevention technology fitted.
Mercedes GLE Coupe reliability
The GLE Coupe is such a niche model, it's unlikely it will appear in our Driver Power survey, but Mercedes dropped to 28th out of 30 brands in our 2020 results. Just under 17% of owners told us their car had experienced at least one fault within the first year, citing electrics and interior trim as the biggest culprits. Low scores for running costs and servicing also dragged the brand down the rankings. Owners were more favourable about the interior styling, and said their cars were fast and comfortable.
Safety
Mercedes has been at the cutting-edge of safety for decades, and as the GLE Coupe is one of its flagship models, the car is fully loaded in this department. The standard version has already received five stars in Euro NCAP crash-testing, and this should translate directly to the Coupe. Standard features include lane-keeping assistance, active cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.
AMG Line Premium Plus models and above feature Mercedes' Driving Assistance package as standard, with blind-spot warnings, cross-traffic automatic braking and a system that can automatically help the driver stay at the correct speed limit. Along with automatic emergency braking, the GLE Coupe can also help the driver steer around an obstacle to avoid a collision.
