Renault 4 first glimpse! Retro-renaissance continues with new all-electric small SUV

The Renault 4 electric small SUV is nearly here – here is our first look at a few details up close

  • All-new electric small SUV
  • Shares its EV tech with the upcoming Renault 5
  • Due to go on sale in 2025

The all-new Renault 4 has been teased ahead of its official unveiling on October 14th, with the French brand showing off a few design details up close. Set to reach showrooms in 2025, the 4 is the second small fully-electric model heading our way from Renault, following the Renault 5 which was unveiled in full earlier this year. While technical details are still few and far between, we know that the Renault 4 will share much of its EV tech with the smaller 5, as well as its similarly retro-themed styling.

What do we know about the Renault 4?

The Renault 4 is the second of two EVs from Renault to revive a historic nameplate for the 21st century. While the Renault 5 sticks to its forebear’s supermini proportions, the 4 will be a trendy small SUV, measuring at 4,140mm in length. That’s similar in size to cars like the Vauxhall Mokka, Jeep Avenger and Toyota Yaris Cross, and 220mm longer than the 5.

The teaser images don’t reveal all that much, but we can tell that some of the retro-themed styling of the Renault 4Ever Trophy concept has made its way to the production model. Up front, there's a wide visor-esque black trim piece spanning the width of the car housing a pair of circular lights. Renault’s illuminating diamond emblem sits proudly in the centre, while a thin LED strip outlines the whole fascia.

The tail-lights appear to have been lifted wholesale from the concept, too, sharing their rounded-off oblong shape. Those lights, along with the sculpted doors and the vertical bumper overriders, are inspired by the original Renault 4 from the 1960s and 70s, helping to establish the retro-futuristic theme. Elsewhere in the teaser images we can spot a small roof spoiler, the new ‘4’ emblem and the optional retractable fabric roof.

The Renault 4 will utilise the same AmpR electric platform that can be found under the upcoming Renault 5. We expect the same battery and electric motor configurations to be offered, meaning UK customers could be able to choose between 40kWh and 52kWh batteries. The latter comes connected to a 148bhp motor in the Renault 5, while the smaller battery gets a 121bhp motor – we expect both to be carried over to the 4.

There’s no word yet on performance or range, but given that the 5 with the large battery can travel up to 249 miles on a charge, the 4 should achieve a figure in that ballpark. We can expect more information following its official reveal at the 2024 Paris Motor Show.

How much will the Renault 4 cost and when can I buy one?

The price of the Renault 4 is still under wraps, but given that the Renault 5 is estimated to cost between £25-30,000, the bigger 4 will probably command a few thousand pounds more – somewhere in the region of £35,000. Renault has opened its ‘R Pass’ scheme, allowing keen UK customers to pay £150 to jump to the front of the order queue. We expect the Renault 4 to go on general sale in early 2025.
