The Audi A3 Cabriolet comes with a folding fabric roof that makes less of a dent in luggage space than a (more secure) folding metal one would. The other advantage of the fabric roof is that it doesn't affect the car's looks – the Cabriolet's styling is smarter than the regular hatchback's in our opinion.

Audi has made the current A3 Cabriolet slightly bigger than the previous car and the result is that boot space has been increased by 60 litres – although that's still less than you get in the regular hatchback. It's more cramped for passengers than the hatchback, too. Making space for the roof means that rear legroom has suffered and is now pretty tight.

Audi A3 Cabriolet interior space & storage

Climb into the driver's seat of the Audi A3 Cabriolet and (as long as you don't look back or up) there's very little to differentiate the open-top car from the standard hatchback. There's plenty of space for adults of all sizes thanks to lots of legroom and a decent amount of headroom.

Parking yourself in the back seat is likely to be more of an issue, however. The A3 Cabriolet is a two-door, so you'll have to squeeze past the front seats to get in. Once in, there's less legroom than in the hatchback, so tall adults will find their knees firmly wedged against the back of the front seats. Getting out is even more of a trial than getting in, as you have to haul yourself out of the low-set seating position.

The A3's door pockets can swallow big bottles of water and they're rubber-lined so their contents don't slide around during bursts of spirited driving. There are also two cup-holders, plus a lidded central storage cubby.

Boot space

With the roof up, the A3 Cabriolet has 320 litres of luggage capacity (60 litres more than the old model), which drops to 275 litres with the roof folded down.
