No diesel or hybrid model means the S-Class coupe has big fuel bills
General running costs of any car as powerful and sophisticated as the S-Class Coupe can be expected to be sky-high, but for once we can say that fuel consumption is unlikely to be the most off-putting aspect of running one on a daily basis.
Mercedes S-Class Coupe MPG & running costs
Clever cylinder-deactivation technology means the 'entry-level' S560 is claimed to achieve 34mpg, which is a remarkable figure for a 463bhp car. Its 188g/km CO2 emissions are less impressive – and if you can claim an S Coupe as a company car, you'll be liable to pay the top 37% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax band.
Move up to the even more powerful Mercedes-AMG S 63 and fuel consumption only increases to 31.7mpg, with CO2 emissions rising to 203g/km. The V12-engined S 65 flagship uses rather more old-school technology and its 23.7mpg fuel consumption and 279g/km CO2 output expose this fact.
Every S-Class Coupe will be liable for £450-a-year road tax, falling to £140 after the car's sixth birthday.
Insurance
Car insurance will also be costly. Expect a group 50 rating across the range and costs likely to vary hugely between drivers. It's always best to obtain an insurance cover quote before you make a buying decision.
Servicing
Expect routine maintenance to be similarly wallet-draining. While the basic annual (yearly or 15,000-mile) oil change might not break the bank, other scheduled operations such as transmission and brake fluid changes, spark plug renewal and air filter replacement will rapidly build up.
Mercedes offers service plans that can take the edge off routine service costs, but wear and tear items won't be included – and the enormous tyres and brake discs that the S-Class coupe needs won't come cheap when replacement is necessary.
Warranty
Every Mercedes sold in the UK is supplied with a three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty, which can be optionally extended. Where an extended warranty is added, though, be aware that it does impose certain limitations, which will be outlined in detail if you decide to buy.
