Renault Megane RS hatchback (2017-2022) - MPG, running costs & CO2

Is your glass half-full? If so, you'll see the Megane RS as a sports car with exceptionally low running costs. Others, though, will frown at the thought of no more than 33mpg from a family hatchback. While routine servicing costs are reasonable, bear in mind that frequent fast driving will take its toll and consumables can be pricey. The RS is a little less expensive to buy than some rivals, though.

Renault Megane RS MPG & CO2

The Megane RS is claimed to return around 33mpg in both standard RS 300 and enhanced Trophy form. The manual gearbox has now been discontinued due to emissions regulations, with the six-speed auto the only option. CO2 emissions range between 184-192g/km across both models. This makes the Megane RS an expensive and unlikely choice for company-car drivers, as it sits in the top Benefit-in-Kind tax band.

All versions of the Megane RS will cost you £150 a year to tax. It’s possible to spec the RS 300 Trophy model to over £40,000 with a few options, which make it liable for an additional £325 per year for the first five years of ownership.

Insurance

The Megane RS occupies insurance group 37, irrespective of whether you pick the standard car or Trophy model. This compares with insurance group 40 for the Civic Type R and group 33 for the Golf GTI.

Servicing

The standard Megane needs a workshop visit annually or every 18,000 miles and it's expected the RS will follow the same regime. Renault offers a £299 ‘Easylife’ service plan scheme for new cars including the Megane RS. It covers servicing for three years or 30,000 miles servicing. Pay £499 and you get four years or 40,000 miles of coverage and £699 covers the car for four years or 60,000 miles.

Even if mileage-related oil changes and regular checks turn out to be inexpensive, a hard-driven Renaultsport will burden its owner with substantial bills for tyres, brakes and other consumable items – although this is true of any other hot hatch.

Warranty

Every Megane is covered by a five-year/100,000 mile warranty, which also includes three years of roadside assistance. Renault increased the length of its standard warranty at the end of 2019 from three years and 60,000 miles, to compete with rivals like Hyundai and Toyota, that also provide five years of cover.
