Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer estate (2016-2021) - Practicality & boot space
The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer doesn’t have the largest boot in the class, but it’s a very usable space nonetheless
As an estate, the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer has to impress in this regard and, thankfully, it does. While it doesn’t have the biggest boot in the class, it’s a good shape and there’s a decent amount of storage space in the passenger compartment, too.
Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer interior space & storage
One thing’s for certain, there’s plenty of space in the Astra’s passenger compartment. Both front-seat occupants are able to stretch out with ease, while passengers in the back get plenty of legroom, too. The doors also open nice and wide, which means getting small children in and out should be pretty easy.
There are a decent number of cubbyholes and good storage space inside – although pockets on the back of the front seats aren’t standard across the range, disappointingly. The glovebox is a good size, while there are a couple of cup-holders in the centre console. The door bins are a decent size, too, although the Skoda Octavia has the Astra beaten in this regard.
Boot space
Let’s be clear, the Astra doesn’t have the largest boot in the class, either with the rear seats up or down. With the rear seats in place, it has 540 litres of space – a fair way behind the class-leading Peugeot 308 SW's 660-litre load bay. With the rear seats folded, it also lags behind the Skoda Octavia’s cavernous 1,740-litre space, displacing just 1,630 litres in total.
However, it’s still much larger than the Ford Focus Estate and about on par with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf Estate and SEAT Leon ST in terms of sheer space. Where it does particularly well, however, is in the usefulness of that provided space. It’s a very square shape, with a low load lip, making getting heavy items in and out a complete cinch.
The rear seats fold with ease and can be split 40:20:40, depending on what you need. They also fold pretty flat, with no step between the boot and rear seatbacks, making sliding big items in really easy.
