The new Smart #5 is set to be unveiled on 28th August and will be the its largest model yet
- New electric-only SUV
- Smart’s biggest car yet
- Full reveal on 28th August
Once renowned for its pint-sized city cars, Smart will soon unveil its latest and largest model, the Smart #5. It will be the brand’s third release since partnering with Chinese automaker Geely, following the Smart #1 and Smart #3. Although first images of the new model were leaked online earlier this year, a confirmed reveal date of 28th August means we don’t have to wait long for our first official look.
What do we know so far about the Smart #5?
First, the elephant in the room – the Smart #5 is a big car. Measuring at 4,705mm long, it's roughly the same size as a Volvo XC60, or about 45mm shorter than the popular Tesla Model Y. That’s quite the departure from models like the ForTwo and ForFour that brought the brand to fame, but since Chinese carmaker Geely took 50% ownership, it has pivoted solely to electric SUV production.
So far, Smart has confirmed that the #5 will use a battery larger than 100kWh, with a predicted range of over 340 miles. A 10 to 80% recharge could be achieved in as little as 15 minutes according to Smart, which would be competitive with the best in its class.
Performance looks to be impressive, too. Top-spec models are claimed to put out up to 637bhp, thanks to a dual-motor configuration. A less powerful 579bhp model will be offered, too, along with a pair of single-motor cars with 386bhp and 335bhp.
The Smart #5 ushers in an updated design language for the brand with a more upright body compared to the #1 and #3. The headlight layout is new, too, with a pair of squarer main units connected by a light bar. Elsewhere in the leaked pictures and official teaser images, we can see four separate LED lights along the nose of the #5, with a similar arrangement found at the rear.
No images of the Smart #5’s interior have been leaked so far, so we can only assume that it will arrive with the brand’s newest dashboard layout, previewed by the Smart Concept #5 back in April 2024. This would include a vast digital dashboard, with separate screens for the driver, infotainment and for the passenger. Seating is expected to be limited to five passengers, in line with key rivals like the Tesla Model Y and Skoda Enyaq.
How much will the Smart #5 cost and when can I buy one?
Official pricing won’t be revealed until later in the year, but the Smart #5 is expected to be the marque’s most expensive model. With the Smart #3 costing from around £33,000, the larger #5 is likely to be priced nearer to £40,000.
It will be revealed in full on 28th August, when we expect to receive more information on performance, range and availability.
