MG4 review - Practicality & boot space

The MG4 is a difficult car to rate in terms of practicality. It offers less space than cars of around the same size but it’s much cheaper to buy and has far more room than a comparatively-priced, yet smaller, electric supermini.

On the whole, the MG4 should offer sufficient space for small families, with the car’s flat floor allowing you to sit three passengers abreast in the rear in relative comfort – especially since MG decided to up the kit count and add a third headrest for middle-seat occupants. Happily, opting for the Long Range or Extended range versions will not mean you have to compromise on space despite their larger batteries.

There isn’t much in terms of luxuries, however; passengers in the back can fight over a single USB-A socket that’s mounted in the rear of the front centre armrest.

Boot space

The MG4’s boot can be described as a relatively featureless void that should be sufficient for the majority of shopping trips or weekend jaunts. The Renault Megane E-Tech offers a compartment underneath the boot floor to store your charging cables, but you’ll need to step up to the MG4 Trophy or XPower for the same versatility as the basic SE car doesn’t come with a moveable floor.

On the plus side, all versions get a 363-litre boot, which is almost twice the size of the more-expensive Fiat 500’s. This area can be expanded to 1,177 litres (1,165 litres on Trophy and XPower cars) by folding the rear seats down, leaving a relatively flat load bay to slide larger items inside.
