Alfa Romeo 4C coupe (2013-2018) - MPG, running costs & CO2
The Alfa Romeo 4C offers surprisingly good economy and low emissions for a sports car
The Alfa Romeo is very light at 895kg without fuel or passengers on board. This helps to keep running costs down, as the engine doesn’t have to work very hard to motivate the car at cruising speeds. However, as with any sports car, the harder you drive, the costlier the 4C will be to run.
The 4C is only available in very limited numbers, and demand is unlikely to be outstripped by supply. This means your 4C should hold onto an impressive proportion of its purchase price when it comes time to sell.
Alfa Romeo 4C MPG & CO2
The Alfa Romeo 4C is able to return 41.5mpg fuel economy and emits 157g/km of CO2 – very impressive figures for a sports car that’s capable of 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 160mph. In reality, owners are unlikely to drive the car carefully enough to achieve that kind of economy. Even though these economy numbers were calculated under the old NEDC testing regime, if you drive it carefully the 4C is still relatively fuel-efficient for such a quick car.
You should note that 4Cs registered prior to 31 March 2017, cost £200 a year to tax. For 4Cs registered after that date, the tax changes brought in a surcharge of £320 for the first five times the car is taxed because it originally cost more than £40,000 to buy new. Annual road tax will cost £465 a year, reverting to £145 for the sixth year of ownership.
Insurance group
The Alfa Romeo 4C is built from expensive materials, it has a high purchase price and it’s a sports car. Therefore it sits in the highest insurance group rating, Group 50. When compared to the rival Porsche Cayman, which sits in group 41, it is a sign that 4C ownership does come with a higher cost than its rivals.
Servicing
All 46 of the brand's dealerships across the UK are capable of servicing the 4C and Alfa offers fixed-price service plans for the model. Bear in mind that regular high-speed driving is likely to lead to tyres and brake components needing frequent renewal – significantly adding to running costs.
Warranty
When it was on sale, Alfa offered a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty to 4C buyers, matching the warranty Porsche provides for the 718 Cayman.
