The Citroen C4 has a genuinely huge boot but unfortunately legroom in the back is pretty limited

Practicality & boot space Rating

3.5 out of 5

The Citroen C4 competes well with its rivals on boot space, but interior space is a little more limited. Some of Citroen's people carrier know-how has gone into the interior, with creative storage spaces available.

Citroen C4 interior space & storage

Head and legroom in the front is plentiful, but it's a different story in the back seat, where some may find that legroom is too tight, although headroom is still pretty decent. The Volkswagen Golf is more spacious in this respect.

All Citroen C4s get useful cubbyholes dotted around the cabin, while one advantage of going for the automatic model is the addition of a refrigerated storage area in the centre console, where the gearstick is located on manual models. We’re not sure it’s worth the pain of living with the self-shifting gearbox though.

Boot space

While the Citroen C4 might not have the Volkswagen Golf beaten on quality it’s ahead when it comes to boot space.

In fact, the Citroen's 408-litre boot not only betters the Golf (380 litres), but also the Vauxhall Astra (370 litres) and the Ford Focus (375 litres). Folding the Citroen's back seats expands total load capacity to 1,300 litres, although it would be even better if the Citroen’s back seats folded down flat; unfortunately, they lie at an angle. Getting stuff into and out of the boot is pretty easy though, because the loading lip is helpfully low.

Towing

The Citroen C4 actually makes a pretty decent tow car, especially with the most powerful diesel engine up front. Its towing weight of 1,750kg means that it can haul around a decent-sized caravan, or tow a track day car on a braked trailer, should that be how you get your kicks. Even the worst versions for towing (the PureTech 110 or diesel with an automatic gearbox) can still tow 1,450kg.
