MPG, running costs & CO2 Rating

4.0 out of 5

The engine in the latest Toyota Aygo is the same tried-and-tested 1.0-litre VVT petrol found in the old model, although it’s been revised to improve fuel efficiency and reduce its CO2 emissions.

The Aygo is a very affordable car to run and is competitively priced compared to its main rivals, such as the Fiat 500, Kia Picanto, Volkswagen up! and Hyundai i10.

It has an excellent warranty and the impressive fuel economy and emissions figures previously meant you didn't have to pay road tax. All Aygos cost the standard rate for VED (tax). It’s worth mentioning that the Toyota Aygo has traditionally held its value as a used car better than its Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1 sister models.

Toyota Aygo MPG & CO2

The latest Aygo’s CO2 emissions are rated at 111-120g/km for the manual gearbox and 118-124g/km for the automatic but the switch to the stricter WLTP emissions test means the tiny Toyota no longer qualifies for one of the lowest Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates should you get one as a company car. Toyota says the Aygo’s claimed WLTP rated fuel economy is up to 57.6mpg, with stop and start fitted. The x-shift automatic gearbox doesn't affect those figures too badly, either.

Insurance group

The Toyota Aygo is generally more expensive to insure than its rivals. In entry-level x trim it sat in group six, although the rest of the range creeps up to seven or above. This is pretty similar to the frugal Hyundai i10, which occupies groups 5-9.

Warranty

The Toyota Aygo boasted a comprehensive five-year/100,000-mile warranty cover, as well as a three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty for rust and paint defects and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty until June 2021. This has now been replaced with a 'Relax' warranty of up to 10 years/100,000 miles, which also applies to any Aygo sold previously that's younger than these figures. It's the longest cover on the market, but does require annual servicing at a Toyota service centre to be activated.  This gives owners great long-term peace of mind and easily beats the Volkswagen up!’s three-year warranty. The Hyundai i10 offers a five-year warranty, but with no mileage limit, so it’s a better choice if you don't plan on using a main dealer for servicing.

Servicing

The Toyota Aygo’s main service interval is 20,000 miles, with an intermediate service required every 10,000 miles. Fixed-price servicing is available on all Toyotas. The Aygo’s intermediate service costs around £150, the full service is closer to £250 and there’s also a comprehensive ‘Full+’ service, which includes the replacement of some additional items and costs just under £300. Toyota’s service plans allow you to make a one-off payment up front for maintenance, or spread the cost with regular monthly instalments.
