Porsche Macan Electric review - Range, charging & running costs

“The Porsche Macan Electric boasts a good range and very fast charging speeds, but push it to its limits and range dips significantly”

While the old Macan came with petrol engines focused on performance at the expense of bad fuel economy, the latest version is fully electric, so you get the best of both worlds.

As electric cars go, the Porsche Macan’s large 100kWh (95kWh usable) battery delivers an impressive on-paper range of up to 399 miles for the single-motor variant, which should make it perfectly usable for the majority of drivers. The Macan 4’s extra electric motor means range suffers slightly, and it’s capable of a 381-mile figure.

When you do need to charge up, the Macan is equipped with charging speeds of up to 270kW, so it’s possible to do a 10-80% charge in just 21 minutes at a charging station. For home charging, the Porsche Macan is capable of top-ups at up to 11kW. If your home charger is rated at just 7kW a full charge will take around 13 hours, but at the full 11kW speed this is more around the 10-hour mark.

We particularly like the fact that there’s a charging socket on both sides of the Macan, making it easier to plug in no matter which side the charger is on.

How efficient is the Porsche Macan Electric in the real world?

We tested the Porsche Macan Electric in entry-level Macan 4 guise, with an official 381-mile figure. We managed 275 miles to a charge, but weren’t driving particularly economically – we think with more restrained acceleration, the Macan Electric would have returned a range over the 300-mile mark.

What will the Porsche Macan Electric cost to insure?

The Porsche Macan Electric is yet to get official insurance group ratings, but it’s an expensive, desirable and high-performance electric car, which means it’s likely to sit in a much higher insurance group than more run-of-the-mill models.
