Car with constant problems since I bought it. With less than 5500 kms the car stopped while driving almost causing an accident. 4 fuel injectors were changed. In addition, the gearshift, the start and stop system and the compressor of the air suspension has been changed, plus software and other small parts. The production quality is very low and also the reliability. Volvo customer service is really of low standard. Think twice before buying a Volvo. www.unsafevolvo.com

The car developed a fault on the tailgate as soon as I got it home. The petrol consumption is frightening for a virtually brand new car with less than 500 miles on the clock. The dealer says its my driving style which is a bit of a surprise, as I travel along the A406 each day in economy mode using the inside lane when possible. I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone. Nor the dealer Marshall at Welwyn Garden City.

We spent a long time making our choice on this one, complicated by specifically wanting a petrol (we saw the crisis coming). In the end the Volvo was that little bit more integrated and a little cheaper for the specification than the competition but there is nothing much in it.
To date it has disappointed in some areas; there is a chronic problem with exhaust expansion/contraction noise Volvo have so far failed to fix; the air suspension clatters and bangs over potholes, fuel consumption is only 70% of claimed, the inside edges of the back doors are always filthy, the touch screen is still work in progress and routinely frustrates, the driver aids are complicated to learn and many will never bother, the adaptive headlights don't dip fast enough to avoid dazzling others, the engine can be a bit gruff and tyre noise can be awful on concrete. The driver aids are prone to false positives and you must keep the sensors clean - another chore.
On the other hand, upsides are that it is fast and fun to drive, visibility is excellent, the 360 cameras are brilliant, it feels safe and solid on the road, it looks nice, the interior is very smart and has plenty of space front and back. There is the occasional niggling dash rattle (temperature relatedl?) but apart from that it has been fine. The remote app is surprisingly useful although the remote loading of the satnav destination is unreliable. The real time satnav routing (using Inrix we believe) is most useful but the interface is clumsy.

I weighed up several medium sized SUVs before arriving at the Volvo, including the new Skoda Kodiaq and Audi/BMW equivalents. In the end, the general quality and feel of the Volvo won out, particularly when we thought about long drives to holiday destinations etc. The cabin is excellent for both the front and rear seats, meaning that everyone gets out at the end of a drive with slightly less of a need to stretch and a bit less tired.
The engine is lovely in the D5 and pulls excellently. The automatic gear box is reasonably responsive, the odd delay between putting foot down and a response is probably equivalent to making a double gear shift on a manual, so while at first you notice the delay in reality it makes little difference.
Driver aids are initially quite daunting, but very quickly you can get used to them if you make an effort one at a time. Adaptive Cruise control is really lovely and makes a commute so much less tiring. On Motorways the lane keep assist and adaptive cruise is equally lovely. Little features such as overtake warning lights in your wing mirrors are initially surprising and then quite convenient.
Boot space is not as large as for other cars in similar class size, however it is quite sufficient for us as a family of four, including needing to fit a buggy plus several bags for holiday or shopping etc. Car seats fit easily on to very accessible isofix settings. If you were so inclined to fit a SIM cards in to the car you can also set up a wifi hotspot for kids tablets etc.
The touchscreen was my main hesitation, as nearly all car control features are run through this. I was worried that it would be complicated and fiddly, but in practice it is actually very easy as it only runs on 3 screens and it is intuitive where to go depending on the type of change you wish to make. The pre-programmed voice commands are also very smooth, so if you wish there is no need to even use the touchscreen to change radio, temperature etc. Android Auto built in works beautifully with the large touch screen, which is an added bonus as you are able to control apps such as Audible or GooglePlay very easilly through the screen.
Mileage is a minor disappointment. At 35mpg over our first 10,000miles it is definitely thirstier than was expected. If we did more motorway driving over long distances this would obviously improve, but for every day driving and commuting 50miles per day I had hoped to get 40+.
Overall, we're very happy that we went for the Volvo. The general quality makes it a very relaxing and easy car to live with. It is the first car I have owned or driven where I really felt the improvement in quality of life for the additional cost.
