“True to the brand’s ethos, the MG HS offers a lot of equipment for the money and its interior is better than before”

The latest MG HS gets a much improved interior over that of the previous model. It’s much more modern than the old HS’s cabin and material and build quality is higher – there’s lots of soft-touch plastics and we were impressed with how good it was for the price. Admittedly there are some cheaper materials used in certain areas, but these tend to be low down in places you’d rarely look or touch.

Is the MG HS’s infotainment and sat-nav system easy to use?

The MG HS gets a large touchscreen equipped with sat nav and a digital driver’s display, both 12.3 inches in size, although these are similar to the systems used in other MG models which aren’t the best. Resolution and loading times are inferior to those of rival systems, and the operating system can be a little fiddly to navigate through. The good news is that it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility which we think most buyers will prefer using most of the time.

Is the MG HS well equipped?

As tends to be the case with MG models’ focus on value for money, the MG HS feels well equipped for the price. SE models get the aforementioned infotainment and digital driver’s displays. There’s also ‘MG Pilot’ which brings a host of driver assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist, blind spot detection and driver attention alert – while this is a generous suite of safety tech, we found them to be quite intrusive.

Trophy models are only around £2,500 more expensive but gain wireless smartphone charging, an upgraded sound system, 360-degree parking camera, dual-zone air con, a handy powered tailgate and heated front seats as well as black faux leather upholstery.

What options should you choose on the MG HS?

Full options for the MG HS are yet to be confirmed, but it’s likely MG will keep things simple by offering most features as part of the two trims, which keeps manufacturing costs – and thus purchase price – down.
