MG HS review - MPG, running costs & CO2 emissions
“An affordable price and the plug-in hybrid’s impressive range means the MG HS is cheap to run”
The MG HS is offered with a conventional 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine lower down in the range, but there’s also a plug-in hybrid version from launch, which boasts a very competitive electric range for the price. Later, a full hybrid version will arrive helping to keep running costs low.
Full economy information for the plug-in hybrid is yet to be confirmed, but the most impressive thing about it is its large 24.7kWh battery which allows for up to 75 miles of electric driving. This should not only come in very handy to save fuel during around-town driving, but it’s also easily enough for most people’s daily commute.

How much will the MG HS cost in tax?
The pure-petrol 1.5-litre version of the MG HS will cost the standard rate in VED (road tax) which is currently £190 per year, while the plug-in hybrid and forthcoming full hybrid will qualify for a £10 discount on that annual cost. Because the MG HS is so cheap to buy, it won’t incur the extra surcharge for models over £40,000 from years two to six of its life.
While we don’t have official CO2 emissions figures for the plug-in hybrid yet, it will undoubtedly be the version with the lowest figure, making it the ideal choice for company car drivers, sitting in a lower BiK (Benefit-in-Kind) tax bracket.
What will the MG HS cost to insure?
Insurance groups for the MG HS are yet to be revealed, but for context the old model ranged from group 16 for the petrol, right up to 27 for the PHEV. It’s just speculation at this point, but we anticipate that could increase for this new version of the plug-in model given its longer electric range making it more desirable, but we’ll have to wait and see when insurance groupings are confirmed.
