MG HS review - Reliability & safety
“MG comes last in terms of customer satisfaction, but the brand offers a competitive warranty”
Unfortunately MG performed very poorly in our recent Driver Power customer satisfaction surveys – in fact, the brand finished in last place out of 32 manufacturers in the 2023 results. The only category in which the brand impresses customers was value for money, where it came in second place. Reliability isn’t particularly impressive, with 33% of owners reporting an issue with their MG within the first year of ownership. It’s unclear what these issues are mostly attributed to, with the majority marking them in the ‘other’ category, while electrical issues made up 34% of faults. The MG HS itself is too new to have featured in the our latest model-specific survey.
How safe is the MG HS?
No one can accuse MG of skimping on the safety kit for the MG HS, but we don’t particularly like the incessant alarms and bongs which sound while you’re driving, and these can be difficult and distracting to turn off through the infotainment display.
However, you can’t argue with its impressive safety rating – Euro NCAP awarded the MG HS a full five-star rating in November 2024, with 90% and 85% in the adult and child occupant protection categories, respectively. Vulnerable road users are well protected, with 83% in this category, while the MG HS was awarded 74% in the safety assist technology category. These impressive results are a reminder that you don’t necessarily have to skimp on safety when buying a budget-friendly car.
What are the MG HS service intervals?
MG recommends getting its cars serviced every 15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. That’s actually a longer service interval than the industry standard which tends to be every 10,000 miles for cars with a combustion engine.
What is the warranty on the MG HS?
While reliability might have a poor reputation, MG does at least provide a competitive warranty to bring some extra peace of mind. All MGs are covered for up to seven years or 80,000 miles, covering faults and the replacement of non-consumable parts.
